How HDS Coverage Works

Maximizing Your HDS Benefits

HDS has multiple plan tiers, and coverage for implants and prosthetic work varies. Here's how we help you get the most out of yours.

Benefits Verification

Before treatment, we verify your specific plan, annual maximum, deductibles, and what services are covered at what percentage.

Pre-Authorizations

For larger cases, we submit pre-authorizations to HDS so you know in writing what's covered before any treatment begins.

Phased Treatment

For multi-stage cases, we can sequence treatment across plan years to make full use of annual maximums when it benefits you clinically.

Adjunctive Coverage

Things like CT imaging, surgical guides, bone grafting, and crowns may all have different coverage rules. We sort those out for you.

Direct Billing

We file electronically with HDS and follow up on claims. You don't pay upfront and chase reimbursements.

Honest Estimates

You'll get a written estimate showing what HDS pays, what you'd owe, and what alternative options would cost — before any treatment.

Reality Check

Will HDS Cover Dental Implants?

The honest answer: it depends on your specific HDS plan and the clinical situation. Some HDS plans cover a portion of implant-related services. Some cover the prosthetic work but not the surgical placement. Some cover only alternative treatments like bridges or dentures.

What we won't do: tell you generically "implants are covered" or "implants aren't covered." Insurance language is too plan-specific for that to be useful.

What we will do: verify your exact plan, walk you through coverage line by line, and give you a written estimate that shows what HDS pays and what you'd owe — before you commit to anything.

Once we have the specifics, we can also discuss strategies like phasing treatment across plan years, combining implants with covered alternative procedures, or sequencing work to make the most of your annual maximum.

FAQ

HDS & Implant Insurance Questions

Do you accept HDS?

Yes. We file claims directly with Hawaii Dental Service for most plan types. Bring your HDS card or member ID to the consultation and we'll verify your specific benefits.

Are dental implants covered by HDS?

It depends on your specific HDS plan. Some plans cover a portion of implant-related services; others cover prosthetic work but not surgical placement; others cover only alternative treatments. We verify your specific plan and walk you through exactly what's covered before any treatment begins.

What is a pre-authorization and do I need one?

A pre-authorization is a written confirmation from HDS of what they will and won't cover for your specific treatment plan, before treatment begins. For larger cases like implants, we strongly recommend pre-authorization — and we handle the submission for you.

Can I split treatment across plan years to maximize coverage?

Sometimes yes — when it makes clinical sense. HDS plans typically have an annual maximum benefit, and for multi-stage treatment we can sometimes sequence work across plan years to make better use of those benefits. We'll discuss whether that applies to your case.

What if my HDS plan doesn't cover implants?

Many HDS plans still cover related services like 3D imaging, extractions, bone grafting, or the crown that goes on top of an implant — even if the implant itself isn't covered. We'll identify every covered component and apply your benefits where we can.

Do you accept HDS Drug, HDS Vision, or only the dental plans?

We work with HDS dental plans. HDS Drug and Vision are separate products and don't apply to dental treatment. If you're not sure which HDS plan you have, bring your card to the consultation and we'll sort it out.

What if I have HDS plus a secondary insurance?

We can coordinate benefits between HDS and a secondary carrier when applicable. Bring both insurance cards and we'll determine the order of benefits and how each contributes.

We'll examine your case, verify your HDS coverage, and give you a written treatment plan with a clear benefits estimate. Then you decide.
