Dental Bridge Procedure
A dental bridge is a dental prosthetic that bridges the gap created by one or more missing teeth. The bridge is typically made of porcelain or zirconia and is attached to the surrounding healthy teeth with dental cement. In some cases, the dental bridge may be anchored to a dental implant that has been surgically placed in the jawbone.
The procedure to place a dental bridge typically involves filing down the two healthy teeth on either side of the gap, taking a dental impression, and then fabricating the dental bridge. Once the dental bridge is ready, it is placed in the mouth and attached to the surrounding teeth. The dentist will then adjust the fit of the dental bridge and ensure that it is properly seated. Finally, the dentist will check bite alignment and polish the bridge. Dental bridges are an effective way to replace missing teeth and restore dental function and esthetics.
Traditional Dental Bridge
The traditional dental bridge is the most commonly used type of dental bridge. It is composed of one dental crown adhered to the surrounding teeth with a fake tooth or teeth in the middle. The dental crowns provide anchor points, while the fake tooth “bridges” the gap. Traditional bridges are strong, but they require modification of the two adjacent teeth.
Maryland Bonded Bridge
These bridges use a metal or porcelain framework that is simply adhered to the back of your teeth, eliminating the need for modification of the adjacent teeth. However, it’s important to note that their strength depends on the strength of the adhesive, and metal frameworks can cause tooth discoloration.
Cantilever Dental Bridge
The cantilever dental bridge is a less common type of bridge. This type of bridge uses a single anchor tooth and can only be placed towards the front of the mouth. While cantilever bridges are not as widely used as other types of bridges, they can be a safe and effective option in some cases.
Implant-Supported Bridge
If you’re looking for a dental bridge that is durable, strong, and can span large gaps, an implant-supported bridge may be the right choice for you. Dental implants are placed into your jawbone to provide a sturdy foundation for the bridge, and because they don’t require adjacent teeth, they can be used to replace multiple missing teeth. This type of dental bridge does require a more invasive placement procedure and a longer recovery period, but the results are worth it.
